I want to take this opportunity also to thank a number of individuals who helped while I was laboring to finish this book. Several professors from the Bloomington, Indiana, campus of Indiana University were invaluable for their expertise. Dr. Martha Nyikos, Dr. Farida Pawan, and Dr. Mitzi Lewison deserve tremendous gratitude for their instruction and guidance in the past three years. I want to say a special "thank you" to my supervisor, Dr. Serafin M. Coronel-Molina, who has been so helpful in giving me his expert advice on literacy and linguistics. All of these educators in the Language Education Department were dedicated, caring, and ready to assist a doctoral student. My gratitude also goes to Dr. Peter Cowan from the Language Education Department for the use of his Literacy Snapshot and Literacy Log inquiry projects. Dr. Curtis J. Bonk from the Instructional Systems Technology Department gets my thanks for his introduction of Computer Assisted and Technology-based Chinese language learning. I sincerely thank Dr. David, J, Flinders from the Curriculum Studies Graduate Program for his definition of Culturally Responsive Pedagogy, the theoretical framework for this book. Last but not least, I thank Michael Landes, a faculty member in Indiana University's Geology Department for making the wonderful map of Chinese speaking countries that is included in the book.

I am also grateful to have had Carolyn Sue McClary as my editor and I-Ting Li as my fabulous graphic designer.
